Bophut is one of the few spots on Samui that has conserved some of the island's original Thai-Chinese atmosphere. In reality it comprises two places: Bophut beach and the Fisherman's Village. Perhaps, it is one of the oldest places on the island. The beach stretches between Big Buddha and Maenam for several kilometres. A great place for family holidays, the white sandy beach is lined by a promenade with top restaurants. Bophut is one of the towns in Koh Samui where the Chinese migrants settled and stayed for many years, and recently, many companies have invested in the area. Fisherman's Village, a charming village on the east side of the beach, is fastly gaining a good reputation that stretches way beyond Samui. Undoubtedly, it is the most elegant and well-preserved place on the island. Lined by old wooden Chinese shop-houses, neighbouring with a few modern buildings matching the tone, it has conserved a distinctly Mediterranean feel. This has probably a lot to do with the fact that it was the main French outpost for many years. Take a walk through the Fisherman’s Village and its pleasant streets with a big variety of restaurants, bars and shops. This is a great place to find something unique and meaningful for your loved ones who have stayed home. Many handcrafted items are available there and its quality is generally high. But be prepared to barter for goods at least 20% off their offered price. You will never be bored as there is a big variety of water sports offered here, including jet skis and canoes. Moreover, there are dozens of sport bars, live music venues, all competing for guests' attention. Recently, Bophut has become a centre of yoga practice on the island and number of schools have been opened therein.
