Located in central Italy Tuscany stretches from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Breathtaking landscape, artistic legacy and stand-out cities make it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The region is known for its sceneries, traditions, history, art heritage and its impact on high culture. From the Etruscans to the Romans, Tuscany is possibly the greatest repository of art in the world. It is regarded as the birthplace of the Renaissance and has been home to many figures influential in the history of art and science. The region still has a lot of exceptional paintings and sculpture, frescoes and architectural masterpieces. It contains well-known museums such as the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace. Visitors come here for many reasons: many in search of fine art, others to explore the extraordinary countryside. Gourmets and wine buffs travel to Tuscany to enjoy the simple yet wonderful cuisine. The region produces various fine wines, including Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Morellino di Scansano and Brunello di Montalcino. Seven Tuscan localities have been designated World Heritage Sites: the historic centre of Florence; the historical centre of Siena; the square of the Cathedral of Pisa; the historical centre of San Gimignano; the historical centre of Pienza; the Val d'Orcia, and Medici Villas and Gardens. There are over 120 protected nature reserves in the region. There is a lot to see and do in Tuscany, the difficulty is really where to start. Vicchio is a town located about 25 kilometres northeast of Florence, the capital of the region. Florence is famous for its history: a centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the time. Its museums, palaces, and churches house some of the greatest artistic treasures in the world. It was home to the Medici, one of history's most important noble families. Florence lies in a basin formed by the hills of Careggi, Fiesole, Settignano, Arcetri, Poggio Imperiale and Bellosguardo. The Arno river and three other minor rivers flow through it.
